Members of the Green Coalition for Responsible Waste/Resource Management worked with ABC7’s producer Jenifer Onley, who spent months researching this story. This investigative report reveals that our green waste, that we believe is being composted, is actually going to landfills as Alternate Daily Cover (ADC) or for bank stabilization. Green waste and other organics that are landfilled generates methane gas 23x more harmful than carbon dioxide.

Due to a quirk in the recycling law it is allowed to be counted as “recycled”. Marin County’s questionable recycling rate includes 16% greenwaste that is landfilled. Yet we are led to believe it is being composted!

The good news is that Assemblyman Jared Huffman, whom our team has been briefing, will be intoducing legislation on the phasing out of greenwaste as ADC at our landfills statewide.
